<div>The National Library of Australia's Preserving Access to Digital Information (PADI) initiative aims to provide mechanisms that will help to ensure that information in digital form is managed with appropriate consideration for preservation and future access.</div>

<div>Its objectives are:</div>

<div> 1. to facilitate the development of strategies and guidelines for the preservation of access to digital information;</div>
<div> 2. to develop and maintain a web site for information and promotion purposes;</div>
<div> 3. to actively identify and promote relevant activities; and</div>
<div> 4. to provide a forum for cross-sectoral cooperation on activities promoting the preservation of access to digital information.</div>

<div>The PADI web site is a subject gateway to digital preservation resources. It has an associated discussion list padiforum-l for the exchange of news and ideas about digital preservation issues.</div>

<div>The PADI site owes its existence to the Australian library community which made a recommendation at the Towards Federation 2001 (TF2001) meeting in 1993 that a group comprising members from the library and archives sectors be established to develop appropriate
guidelines for the preservation of information in electronic form - this became the PADI Working Party. This Group has included representatives from: the National Archives of Australia (previously Australian Archives), the Australian Council of Libraries and
Information Services (ACLIS), Australian Information Industry Association Ltd, Australian War Memorial, Australian Department of Communication, Information Technology and the Arts, ScreenSound Australia, National Gallery of Australia, the Commonwealth Scientific
and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia and Starlit Cooperative Multimedia Centre.</div>

<div>In 1996, it received some funding from the Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee (AVCC) and the following year gained support through incorporating its activities in the National Library of Australia's Australia's Cultural Network (ACN) initiative.</div>

<div>The National Library of Australia will continue its support for this activity through its Digital Preservation Section.</div>
