MORISSET HOSPITAL CENTENARY
Celebrating - '100 YEARS OF CARING'
SATURDAY 9TH MAY 2009
On the 9th of May 1909, the first patients, 78 men, were formally admitted
to Morisset Hospital. Since its foundation, the Morisset Hospital has
played a major role in the local community, from the opening of the first
building, completed in May 1909, to the present time
At its peak in the mid 1960s Morisset Hospital accommodated almost 1500
patients. Today it is a much smaller non-acute mental health facility,
including Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Neuropsychiatry and Specialist Mental
Health Services for Older People.
The program is a day full of interesting activities including -
· Outrigger canoe demonstration
· Martial arts display
· Colouring competition
· Food & other stalls
· Vintage & classic car display
· Photographic & museum displays
·
A Centenary cricket match to commemorate the 1909 game between the Hospital
and the town will start at 10.30 am. The Hospital Bowling club will be open
for the public to try bowls. Outrigger canoes and remote control model
yachts will also be available to try.
As well as more than 300 historical photos, the Historical Society will open
their museum display of interesting artefacts never before on display to the
general public. Memorabilia available for purchase from the historical
society includes a DVD, four different postcards produced from early
photographs, numerous publications relating to the history of Lake
Macquarie, including the Morisset Hospital book and the last remaining
copies of the high quality publication Lake Macquaries Heritage.
The former Morisset Hospital Everlast pegs, now produced by Lifeline and
known, as the Lifeline Lifelong Peg will also be sold on the day. These
pegs are made of plastic-coated wire and are renowned for their strength.
The shape and size of the pegs make them also ideal for arthritis sufferers.
Pegs cost 50 cents each for seconds and $7.50 for a packet of 10. In today
s throw away society that amount is a relatively small amount to pay for
pegs that last a lifetime and support the good work of Lifeline.
At 1.30 pm Greg Piper MP & Mayor of Lake Macquarie will unveil the centenary
plaque. The celebrations will culminate in a dinner in the 100 year old
Recreation Hall. The centenary planning committee have been overwhelmed by
the response with tickets for the dinner now almost sold out.
